Eye Spy

Critically acclaimed screenwriter debuts the first in the LIza Radley Housewife Detective Chronicles

"Mattison’s writing is crisp, snappy, witty, and deeply entertaining—I was hooked right on the first page" "It crackles with funny one-liners and wry
humor. " New York Book Pundit

"Mattison writes with a quirky, funny style that kept me engaged through the entire story." Beckstar Reviews

When Liza Radley realizes it’s cheatin’ season and no self-respecting detective’s gonna spy on her husband for the $800 and change she has hidden in a plastic soap dish, she does what any normal transplanted Georgia Peach would do--she becomes a private eye.

While downing her fourth maple-glazed curbside, Liza discovers “Eye Spy”, a shop for the self-motivated sleuth in the heart of Boston. Inspiration strikes and she enters the world of Jack Parella, the owner/operator who talks like Humphrey Bogart but with a Southie accent and is more than willing to train Liza in the ways of amateur sleuthing, while simultaneously infuriating and titillating her.

Though Liza starts the journey intending to rebuild her crumbling suburban life, she finds herself thrust into a fiery mystery as head of "Crimes of the Heart Detective Agency" with Parella by her side. Thus our dynamic duo is primed for their next adventure.

The Bogus Biker

Book Description

July 17, 2013
Meet Penelope Pembroke:
owner of the best (only) B&B in Amaryllis, Arkansas (pop. 5492) who’s
flirting with 50, divorced (Travis Pembroke, had a wandering eye'), mother of Amaryllis PD Detective Bradley Pembroke, apple of her father Jake Kelley's eye, best friend of Mary Lynn Hargrove, the mayor's wife, and the only human creature tolerated by Abijah, the 18-pound orange tabby who stalks the family home-turned B&B.

Penelope keeps her ear to the ground, her eyes open, and her battered heart in solitary confinement. Then one night, while having a beer and a Reuben at the seedy-though-popular Sit-n-Swill, she meets Tiny aka Sam who is about as much of a biker as she is a belly dancer.

She insists on dabbling in danger and disaster despite Sam's best efforts to discourage her. The fireworks begin in Book 1, light up the skies in Books 2,3,4, and 5, and end in one spectacularly explosive display in Book 6.

Book 1: The Bogus Biker
A police raid on the Sit-n-Swill, a devastating fire at her ex-husband's historic home, and a game of cat-and-mouse with Tiny aka Sam turns Penelope's placid life upside down.

She’s hot on the trail of con-man Alexander Sternwood, the missing grandson of wealthy widow, Muffy Sternwood. It sounded like an easy case, at least until she was kidnapped by a couple of upset Russian hit-men named Boris and Ivan, then by two seriously psychotic brothers called Smith and Jones, then finally by Tough Tony DiCenzo, head of the largest crime family in Scottsdale. To top it off, she’s found a dead body that seems to be a message directed toward her. Now, with the help of ex-cop Gina Rondinelli, a stripper named Danica, and her best friend Sophie, they need to make sure that a slightly illegal international jewel sale goes smoothly, or else. All of this pales in comparison, though, with an even greater danger. Laura has decided that now would be the perfect time to get back together with her old boyfriend Jackson Reno, who just happens to be a Scottsdale detective. The only hitch in her plans for romance is Maximilian, a gorgeous crime lieutenant who has his sights set on Laura, a feeling that she can’t help but return. Craziness, romance, and more than a little danger are in store when Laura Black and her Scottsdale friends are on the case!

Lost Creek

Book Description

May 28, 2013
According to Clancy, there was a family of serial killers living in Lost Creek -- the Campbells. "They've been killing off outsiders fer a hundred years. The head of the family is Sheriff Campbell. He's been killing under the shield of his badge since he was first elected back in 1964. His daughter, Darla, is the drug-dealing bartender at the Wagon Wheel Saloon."

When Jack Leery suddenly finds himself the owner of a rural cabin on a hundred acres in Lost Creek, Colorado, left to him by a mysterious benefactor called Martin Johannsson, he leaves his professional life as a website designer in Minneapolis to set out on what turns into the adventure of a lifetime.

Jack's nail-biting journey to Lost Creek over treacherous mountain roads in his old Honda Accord sets the tone for this beautifully written tale that taps into mythic archetypes of the American West. At first completely alone in his primitive shack, Jack is soon adopted by Martin's dog, Blue. Then when Jack meets his neighbor, the crotchety old Vietnam vet Clancy, a strange bond is formed. But is Clancy's story about the murderous Campbell family just another one of his tall tales far too fantastical to be true? By the end of this action-packed novel filled with dizzying twists and turns, Jack will have laid his earlier identity aside and found out who he really is.

Under Tomorrow's Alleged Sky

Before recorded history, humanity lived outside, with no rules or boundaries. They did as they pleased, when they pleased—and they chose war. The entire world, a population of seven billion people, turned their backs on one another. Nobody could trust anybody. It was a dark, terrifying time.

Nobody knows exactly when or how it happened, but one day, the sky exploded. Nuclear war had erupted, and it was intent on wiping out humanity.

Finally, there was nobody left to keep fighting. Everyone was dead. The Earth had been rendered little more than a wasteland. Small pockets of people emerged from their underground bunkers to find that they could no longer breathe the air or survive the harsh ultraviolet rays of the sun.

These ragtag heroes banded together, intent on keeping what was left of the human race alive. Together, they developed the perfect system, and the City was born. On Day 1, Year 1, the Shaft was first powered on, and for hundreds of years, it has kept the City running ever since.

Initially, everyone lived on the Ground, together, in peace and harmony. But all too soon, people began to take advantage of each other. They fought, and war broke out once again. The winners claimed the top of the City, condemning the losers to the Ground. In the ensuing peace treaty, a Slayer was selected to keep the City from breaking out into war ever again. But it was too late—the damage had already been done. The Ground had become a place for the losers, and the winners rose toward the sky. This division only grew more dramatic as the City aged, and the oxygen filters near the Ground began to overheat and die.

Today, the City is divided into 50 Rings. Citizens from lower Rings may not enter upper Rings, to keep the upper Ring population controlled. At graduation, each one of you will be given a chance to showcase your skills and prove your worth to the City. Do well, and you may become an Elite. Fail, and you will find yourself at the bottom.

Best of luck to each and every one of you.

Fall of a Sparrow

Book Description

June 27, 2013
Fall of a Sparrow, first of the Odds Bodkin's series, introduces DI Cora Bodkin, recently transferred from Scotland Yard to the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary.
Karen Lawrence and Mary Kemp, retired Canadian professors, have immigrated to England and have settled in Coombe Gilbert, a fictional village in South Devon. Feeling culturally isolated and disconnected from the villagers, they are delighted when Betty, the grocer’s assistant, invites them to her wedding.

Throughout the ceremony and ensuing party, Karen and Mary witness but do not understand the undercurrent of tension and conspiracy upon which float the traditional processes of the nuptials.

Two days later, they discover the mutilated remains of their next door neighbour in a sacred grove near the village and begin to peel away the conventional facade of the villagers.

DI Cora Bodkin, trim, taut and fierce, is in charge of the investigation. Like an arrow, she penetrates the fabric of lies woven by Mabel, the village butcher, her brother Michael, the banker and Tommy, the handyman, piercing their sense of who they are. Self-deception and half-truths drip like blood in their revelations. Attempting to heal both the souls and spirits of his wounded parishioners, the local vicar, Rev. Nicholas Potts ('Nic the Vic'), uses not only his pulpit but also a fortune teller’s tent to piece together the grisly story.

Karen and Mary and DI Cora Bodkin travel parallel routes to discover who is responsible for this horrific human desecration, the former as witnesses to life in the village through the eyes of cultural newcomers and DI Cora Bodkin as the newly arrived representative of legal justice.

How the villagers confront the capacity for evil they have discovered within themselves drives the plot. How DI Bodkin resolves the tension between what is legal and what is ethical shapes the resolution.

Write Off

Book Description

June 28, 2013
Detective Mike Malone anxiously awaits his retirement from the NYPD. When a Congresswoman’s mother falls victim to a serial killer’s rampage, Malone is surprised at his own resurgence when his adversarial captain, who often refers to Mike as everything but a detective, places him at the helm of the investigation. The calculating killer leaves only duct tape behind, and Mike’s memories of the psychopath he brought to justice decades before begin to haunt him.

Ray Hollister, a one-time wonder, questions the authenticity of his current novel, shamefully aware his prior bestseller bordered on plagiarism. When his girlfriend, Gabriele, leaves him, he survives the emotional tailspin only because he is certain he can win her back. When Ray suspects she has not only been tampering with his work but also committing the horrendous crimes precisely as depicted on paper, he decides to disclose the information to Detective Malone.

Energized, now that he at least has a suspect, Malone weans himself off alcohol and painfully welcomes his new female partner, FBI Agent, Lori Galloway. Daunted by his previous partner’s near-fatal injuries and surprised at his ability to again experience a romantic connection, his apprehension builds surrounding his partner’s safety. Together they scour the city for the elusive Gabriele, but the predator is always one-step and one-kill ahead of them.
