Breezes

Book Description

March 27, 2013
THE JEW-CATCHER – Becker is a Jewish man, once a professor at a local university, now living in war-torn, 1943 Berlin. He has been hiding for five years and he has had enough. Much to his girlfriend’s dismay, he leaves his self-imposed confinement and journeys to a park he and his family frequented when he was a child. While breathing in the fresh air and cool breezes, along with the memories of childhood, he encounters, Kreuger, who begins to question him in detail. Becker soon finds out that, though Krueger is very assertive in his style and manner, Krueger has a mysterious and ironic past. He also soon discovers that a man is watching both of them, in the shadows.

SOFT FOOTING – With great ambivalence, Marvin and Emily Estridge, are taking their first vacation since the horrific brutalization and death of their nine year old daughter, Callie. As they are driving on a remote road, in the middle of a severe thunderstorm, Marvin loses control of the car. It hits a telephone pole and both of them are momentarily knocked out. When they awaken the road they were on, disappears, but a new road, not on the map, is in full view. Initially confused, Marvin takes the new road. Within moments, the storm ends and bright, blue sunny skies are present. Beautiful, richly colored flowers adorn the highway, as they eventually enter the town of Hoccie, (an anagram) also not on the map. Over time they meet many of Hoccie’s residents who are exceptionally warm and friendly, all of whom strongly urge the Estridges to visit, “The Hill.” Stanley Menshick tells them that it is the most beautiful place in Hoccie. It is where all the children play. Marvin and Emily do visit “The Hill” and are quickly overwhelmed by the indescribable serenity they feel and the shocking decision they will soon have to make about their future.

CLOSURE – Brooke Jackman is parked in front of a dilapidated home in Lakota Springs, Minnesota. She has been there for a long time, trying to summon the courage to ring the doorbell. The home looks very familiar to her, but she has her doubts. She has been encouraged, by her psychotherapist, to drive from her home in New England to speak to the people inside this house. Her therapist has told her that, in so doing, this action will help her bring “Closure” to a very important and painful chapter in her life- and someone elses.

TAMING THUNDER - Sergeant Jackson Dandridge, head of a three man Confederate patrol, towards the end of the Civil War, is on a scouting mission. So is Sergeant Mason Caulfield, leading a three man Union patrol. Within a short time, they run into each other and shooting ensues. In the middle of this skirmish, a hysterical woman, tightly wrapped in a shawl, carrying something in her arms, dashes into the field of battle, shrieking that her infant son has been trapped in a cave one hundred yards away. She poignantly implores both sides to help her and, despite the terse commands of both Dandridge and Caulfield, refuses to move out of harm’s way. Eventually, the two sides cease they gunfire and, questioning her sanity, reluctantly, follow this hysterical lady into the cave. What they find inside, will test their loyalties and sense of personal honor and, forever alter their lives.

THE GRAVE TURN OF HIPPOCRATES - an absurdist, black comedic look at our nation's health care system from the point of view of the patient. An Orwellian look at where our health care may be in ten years.

Journeys

Book Description

March 29, 2013
LOOKING FOR AMY - Nick Briscoe is frantically searching for his missing daughter, Amy. He enlists the help of the good people of Lankersville, Pennsylvania. In utter desperation, Nick sends his search party in several different directions, while he, alone, explores Alaquamish Creek. As he scouts the stagnant waters, a rolling fog billows towards him. Though it is August, a chill permeates the air. The expected sounds of nature, along Alaquamish Creek, are absent. Within minutes of his search, Briscoe encounters Joshua Cartwright who tells a story, all to familiar to Nick.

VOICES - Dr. Jonathan Nantz, is a psychologist of some renown, with a high-priced office in Manhattan. He receives a call from his friend, Dr Hobson, requesting that he begin treatment, on an outpatient basis, with James Marshall Hansen, who had been an inpatient at Kindervoort State Hospital. At the same time, prominent psychologists have been found murdered in their offices and the police have no clues as to the killer. In this story that deals with the dueling for psychological supremacy, Dr Nantz soon discovers that he needs all his considerable skills in treating Hansen, a man of many talents.

CHANGE-UP - written in realistic style, examines the impact of the sudden, unexpected and accidental death of a young man and how it touched the lives of two people, one of whom, was responsible for his death. It examines the emotional coming to terms of these two people confronted by a person “dying out of turn,” and the paralyzing guilt and the behavioral inertia as consequences borne out of this tragedy. It resolves through their excruciatingly painful acceptance of the unwanted results of choice.

HEART OF THE MATTER – Faye Klatner is an older woman, living with her daughter’s family, in the Midwest. This includes her unruly fourteen year old, granddaughter, Robin. Miriam, Faye’s daughter, asks her to see if Robin will talk to her about what is making her so irritable. In trying to reach Robin, Faye tells her a very private story that happened, to her, many years ago, during World War II, when she was in her early twenties, living alone, in their same house. Within a short distance, from the house, a German POW camp was situated. Captain Paul Gruber of the Wehrmacht, has escaped and forced his way into Faye’s home. Faye is initially very scared, but she has an odd feeling this intruder will not hurt her. Captain Gruber, though outwardly hardened and also frightened, feels the same way. When the local authorities come searching for him, Faye hides Gruber in a secret room in her basement. After the search party leaves, she goes down to find a shocked Gruber. He has just discovered that Faye is Jewish and that she, alone, was placed on a ship, before the war began, to come to America. The two of them had grown up in the same town in Germany. Major Quentin Josephs and Sheriff Dustin Dalton, head of the original search party, re-enter Faye’s home and find her standing next to Gruber. An interesting confrontation ensues between the characters. At its conclusion, the story returns to the present day. The moral of the story, does not escape Robin. But there is one more surprise and one more moral that Robin did not expect.

AND THE ROSE BUSH STILL HAS THORNS – written in absurdist style, pays homage to “1984,” but carries it a few steps further. The story focuses on a suburban family, getting ready for dinner, one evening, awaiting the arrival of Harold, husband and father of this family. He is stern and emotionless. He oversees the minutest of details of his family’s behavior as prescribed by “Compy.” Hannah Arendt’s phrase, “the banality of evil,” finds a warm home in this story of the horrific consequences of relinquishing the very human qualities of personal thought and standing forth behind one’s personal convictions and morality.

Book Description

March 26, 2011
Ron Ketchum saw his share of the dark side of life as a cop in Los Angeles. Then he left L.A. to become the chief of police in the Sierra Nevada resort town of Goldstrike. One sunny morning in the mountains, though, he comes upon a crime unlike anything he’s ever seen before.

He finds the body of an African American man nailed to a tree.

The victim is a highly respected minister, and his father is the nationally known televangelist Jimmy Thunder. Ron, on the other hand, has described himself in court as a recovering bigot.

Goldstrike’s mayor for life and movie icon, Clay Steadman, wants Ron to catch the killer fast. Adding to the pressure, the victim’s grandmother comes to town. She tells the media mob that has descended on Goldstrike that God will curse the town until the killer is caught.

That’s when a rogue mountain lion begins attacking people. At first, the attacks happen on the wilderness outskirts of Goldstrike. Then the predator moves into town, leaping a fence into a family’s backyard. Finally, it turns the tables on one of the hunters sent out to bring it down.

Looking for a killer, hunting a lion and defending his own integrity — makes being a cop in L.A. seem like the good old days.

Book Description

January 1, 2012
Strange things happen in the Alaska bush. The native Alaskans say that a white man, too long alone out there will go mad. Gus O'Neill suspects it may have happened to him. His two best friends, Hard Case Calis the old Alaska State Trooper, and Haywood Jennings the flying veterinarian think so too. Gus spends a summer on Moose Jaw Creek where he builds a cabin, finds a ravaged red-haired beauty he comes to love, and murders the man who had sexually molested her. When Haywood flies in to join Gus for a moose hunt he finds his friend alone and raving. There is no evidence that Gus' redhead or the dead man he claims to have killed ever existed.

Gus is baffled by the disappearance of his woman and the body of his victim, but he agrees to join Haywood on a moose hunt. While getting in position to drive a large bull toward Haywood, Gus is attacked by a giant grizzly that has been stalking him. He manages to kill the bear but is badly mauled in the process. Haywood finds Gus and the dead bear, and flies his injured friend back to Fairbanks for treatment. The following day Haywood returns to Gus' cabin with Hard Case to deal with the dead bear. During the flight they discuss Gus' condition and his weird tale about the woman he had found and the man he'd killed. They agree Gus must have gone a little crazy while out there alone. Things become complicated when, back in the woods near Gus' cabin, they find no bear carcass. Haywood insists he had seen and touched its dead body just yesterday. The two friends return to Fairbanks as mystified as Gus. When Hard Case unearths an unsolved case file that dates back more than forty years, it becomes clear that Gus may not have imagined the woman or the murder after all. Strange things happen in the Alaska bush.

Champagne Toast

Book Description

January 7, 2013
"You never lose faith in human nature when reading a Melissa Brown book. I believe a book often reflects that author’s general view on life and now after having read two of her novels, I want to keep ‘swimming’ in her unique brand of positivity. In true Melissa Brown style, we are given two characters to love, invest ourselves in, and cheer for. We are shown true heartbreak but we also stay confident that she would look after our hearts in the end. There is great joy and comfort in that. A book for the heart and from the heart, a beautifully narrated story that will feed every single romantic bone in your body."---Natasha is a Book Junkie

"With a mix of well written characters and a believable story line Champagne Toast holds your attention from beginning to end. Melissa Brown did not disappoint with this follow up and this book would be a great add to your bookshelf. For me this was a 5 star!"-Pam, The Book Avenue

"I'm still in awe that Champagne Toast is only Melissa Brown's second novel. I was completely impressed with her writing and story telling in Bouquet Toss and in Champagne Toast Melissa proves once again what a great romantic writer she is. Her stories aren't overly complicated and her words flow effortlessly as you get lost in her stories. As you read about Kate and Evan's romance you get a real sense that you're getting to know these characters in a personal level and you are right there with them as they fall in love, laugh, cry, and go through heartache. Melissa Brown reminds you that love is not easy. There will most definitely be ups and downs, good times and bad. But it's the love that goes through the toughest trials and tribulations that are worth saving and fighting for."--Debbie, Talk Supe

Kate Armour and Evan Maxwell fell hard and fast for each other while attending college. Their once passionate and loving relationship ended when old scars eventually tore them apart. Two years after their breakup, they're each struggling to piece together what went wrong in an attempt to move forward.

Kate, a no-nonsense bartender, must face her past while attempting to focus on her future.

Evan is stifled by his bitter heart, which threatens each and every relationship he attempts after walking away from Kate.

Will life offer them a second chance at love or are old patterns simply too hard to break?

Prairie

Book Description

February 13, 2013
Journey of Dreams- Dreams have a way of infusing themselves into our souls–becoming an indivisible part of who we are. Five lives irrevocably change when their greatest longings become their new reality–and for one, vice versa.

The Journey of Dreams series is Contemporary Christian Fantasy, exploring the delights of our hearts and how the Lord meets them.

-------------------------------

In my dreams, I had always imagined wandering through meadows of golden, calf-high grasses that swayed in a gentle breeze. The dream recurred often—one I’d loved since my childhood. Sitting on the fire escape of our fourth-floor apartment in Pittsburgh, I’d escape into the woods of Wisconsin, the prairies of Kansas, and eventually the little town of De Smet, South Dakota, as I lived and breathed the adventures of Laura Ingalls. However, of all those places, the Kansas prairie somehow infused itself into my soul. I dreamt of the swoosh of the grasses, the musical sound of the cottonwoods when their leaves rustled in summer winds, and clear skies with only small tufts of clouds to mar their azure perfection...Some things we read in books, whether prose or poetry, and think we understand. However, until you’ve stood in a sea of grasses undulating like the waves of the ocean in the morning breeze, you cannot possibly begin to understand what the phrase, “sea of grass” means. As I stood, watching the rise and fall of the blades dancing in unison to a tune inaudible to me, a rush of contentment washed over me. In this vast sea of nothingness, I knew I had come home.

---------------------------------------

Jessa Davidson enjoyed a lifelong fascination and desire for life on the prairie. However, she never expected that fascination to become reality. A far cry from her apartment in Pittsburgh, the world of Prairie is more than just a change in geography--it's a change of life. In Prairie, Jessa examines the innermost parts of her soul and discovers desires she never knew she had.

From the moment she awoke, transported from the cold Pennsylvania winter, on the sunbathed summer prairie, she knew her life would never be the same.

The people of Prairie welcomed her and accepted her--almost without question, but so much of her life changed in that moment--her hopes, dreams, values, and the absolutes of things like time--that she feared accepting her new life as reality.

Is Prairie the dreams of her life come true--or her worst nightmare> Is it real? Is it permanent? Or will she awake to discover that she's lost her mind--or worse, her life?

And the biggest question on Jessa's heart? Does she care?

This is Volume II of a six-volume serial novel.

A marriage of convenience has never been like this.

Just before her eighteenth birthday, the doctors tell Emily she has three months to live. Not much time to complete the bucket list she's had since she was twelve. The first item is the hardest--"Get married"--so she turns to the only man she knows who can help.

Paul, a barely reformed bad boy, has inherited a fortune from his mother, but his life is defined by his conflicted relationship with his father--a white-collar, organized-crime boss who, thanks to Paul, is being brought up on federal charges. Without Emily's testimony, his father might walk, so Paul agrees to her unconventional proposal. He'll be her husband for her last three months.

They agree that she'll testify against his father and he'll help her complete her bucket list. It's not supposed to be a true marriage. No consummation. No future. No love.

No love.

She's supposed to die, after all, and love might not be enough.
