Down the Cellar Steps: A Horror Story

Book Description

May 29, 2013
Melanie doesn’t understand why she’s not allowed in the cellar, and the curiosity is getting the better of her. Finally, she’s determined there’s no way around it. Even if her parents and her nanny will be angry she just has to understand why she hears noises and why she’s not allowed inside. This thrilling little gem is yet another example of why Arthur Pendryll is rapidly gaining a name in the world of short horror fiction.
Warning: This horror story has very dark and disturbing images. Adults should read carefully before determining if the content is appropriate for a child in their care.

Here is a preview:
Like she knew that sometimes when Mommy and Daddy went out and Nanny Carla sent her to bed that noises came from Nanny Carla’s room. Once she’d crept to the hallway and watched, but there wasn’t a monster. Instead, Mr. Harper the gardener came out of the room with a guilty look on his face. She didn’t know why he went to Nanny Carla’s room, but she knew the sounds meant something was happening. When she tried to ask Mrs. Harper if Mr. Harper made noises in their bedroom, Mrs. Harper looked shocked. Before she could answer, Nanny Carla whisked her away with a swat on her bottom and told her she was being improper.

The point was simple, though, even for a little girl like Melanie. Noises meant something, and there were noises coming from the cellar. She wanted to know what was making the sounds. She wasn’t afraid, not really. Mommy, Daddy, Nanny Carla, the cook, and the maid all went down into the cellar every now and then, so there wasn’t a monster. That was sure. Still, why couldn’t she go down? Why couldn’t she see what was there? It was maddening, like when she had to stay in the nursery while Mommy and Daddy entertained guests in the parlor. It was like how she had to drink milk when everyone else at the table got pretty red wine from fancy bottles, fancy bottles from the cellar.

She dropped her doll when she heard a bump from the cellar. The bump was definite and real, and it was louder than the noise the branch made when it bumped up against her window. “Did you hear that, Nanny Carla?”

Nobody answered and she looked up. Nanny Carla wasn’t in the kitchen anymore. She was gone. She was gone and that meant that she wouldn’t try to stop her. She stood to her feet, trembling a little bit and took a step toward the cellar door.

You Only Die Twice

Book Description

December 23, 2012
Stephen King: "Put me down as an enthusiastic Christopher Smith fan. Smith is a cultural genius."

Description:  In her past, Cheryl Dunning died once. A violent act killed her, but heroics brought her back. Now, if she can't save herself from two serial killers hunting her in the Maine woods, she's about to die again, this time from two men armed with a Bible, guns, a deep belief in God, and their twisted interpretation of his word.

Fueled by their righteous fury, they are determined to find Cheryl and murder her for what they perceive as her "life's worth of sins." What they don't know is what Cheryl knows. She's a Maine girl, born and raised--and she knows how to use these woods in ways that might, if she's lucky, turn them against each man.

From the #1 international best-selling author of many thrillers, including "Fifth Avenue," "You Only Die Twice" is a blistering page-turner first, and a comment on Biblical interpretation second. It's Christopher Smith's most controversial and gripping novel to date.

Percy is geeky, small, and unpopular and he suffers from high school's more dreadful fatal flaw; he's a nice guy. In the middle of a childhood bully encounter he is befriended by Logan Maxwell; cool, attractive and altogether exact opposite of himself.

Rebecca is pretty, new, and everything that anyone could ever want in a girl. It comes to no surprise to anyone when she begins dating Logan. Through Logan's insistence, and perhaps more luck than even Percy thought possible, he finds himself becoming fast and close friends with her.

That is, until he realizes that he is in love with her.

Percy now finds himself in an impossible situation. How can he stay loyal to Logan, who is the sole reason he managed to survive 4 years of high school, and be true to his own feelings? Every passing day is becomes a day of emotional turmoil, indecision, and anguish.

In this reality, smart kids like Percy get rejected and good looking guys like Logan are kings. High school is hard. Students are misunderstood. Romance is dramatic. Most important and truest of all: nice guys never get the girl.

THE CURSE AND THE GIFT

Book Description

May 1, 2013
What would you do if you found $100,000 in cold, hard cash in a public restroom? Probably what Robert Greene did - which is why he's in big trouble; which is why his beautiful fiance and unborn baby may not be strong enough to save him; which is why his mother thought he'd be dead by now.

This compelling new pop-thriller hits just the right notes. What else would you expect from a Subway Readers series book? Enjoy this with a latte on the train to work or with a thank you mint in the doctor's office.

Book Description

April 28, 2013
Evergreen is the peaceful, idyllic home for a bustling traveler community. It is home to Patrick Ryan, the figurehead of the community; home to Aidan McCleary, Patrick's mentor and friend; home to scores of youngsters and generations of families. But now Evergreen is also home to a sadistic serial killer, someone who is targeting the youngsters of this once peaceful community.

They know the killer lives among them, know that one of their own is tearing this small community apart. They want to deal with it themselves, to track down the killer and deliver their own justice, but can they find him before he rips their home apart?

Evergreen is a serial killer thriller/whodunnit with a macabre and sinister slant. A book not for the faint hearted.
