Quick History Story 2 - 1/27/12

Jan 27, 1978:

The so-called Dracula killer

On this day in 1978, Richard Chase, who becomes known as the "Dracula Killer," murders Evelyn Miroth and Daniel Meredith, as well as Miroth's 6-year-old son and another woman, in Sacramento, California. Chase sexually assaulted Miroth with a knife before killing her and mutilating her body. He removed some of the organs of the body and filled them with blood before taking them with him. Meredith was found shot in the head.

The previous year, the 28-year-old Chase had been found in a field, naked and covered in cow's blood. His behavior did not come as a complete surprise to those who knew him. As a child, he had been known to kill animals, drinking the blood of a bird on one occasion. He had been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for most of his life. A year prior to the killings, Chase was released because his psychiatrist found that Chase had a handle on his problems.

Upon his arrest, police found that Chase's home was filled with human blood. It was found in the blender and in the sinks, suggesting that Chase had been drinking it for some time.

In 1979, Chase went to trial and his attorney argued that he was insane. However, a jury found that he was sane, convicted him of six counts of first-degree murder and sentenced him to death. Chase killed himself in his cell at San Quentin on December 26,1980.

Quick History Story 1 - 1/27/12

Jan 27, 1888:

National Geographic Society founded

On January 27, 1888, the National Geographic Society is founded in Washington, D.C., for "the increase and diffusion of geographical knowledge."

The 33 men who originally met and formed the National Geographic Society were a diverse group of geographers, explorers, teachers, lawyers, cartographers, military officers and financiers. All shared an interest in scientific and geographical knowledge, as well as an opinion that in a time of discovery, invention, change and mass communication, Americans were becoming more curious about the world around them. With this in mind, the men drafted a constitution and elected as the Society's president a lawyer and philanthropist named Gardiner Greene Hubbard. Neither a scientist nor a geographer, Hubbard represented the Society's desire to reach out to the layman.

Nine months after its inception, the Society published its first issue of National Geographic magazine. Readership did not grow, however, until Gilbert H. Grosvenor took over as editor in 1899. In only a few years, Grosvenor boosted circulation from 1,000 to 2 million by discarding the magazine's format of short, overly technical articles for articles of general interest accompanied by photographs. National Geographic quickly became known for its stunning and pioneering photography, being the first to print natural-color photos of sky, sea and the North and South Poles.

The Society used its revenues from the magazine to sponsor expeditions and research projects that furthered humanity's understanding of natural phenomena. In this role, the National Geographic Society has been instrumental in making possible some of the great achievements in exploration and science. To date, it has given out more than 1,400 grants, funding that helped Robert Peary journey to the North Pole, Richard Byrd fly over the South Pole, Jacques Cousteau delve into the sea and Jane Goodall observe wild chimpanzees, among many other projects.

Today, the National Geographic Society is one of the world's largest non-profit scientific and educational institutions. National Geographic continues to sell as a glossy monthly, with a circulation of around 9 million. The Society also sees itself as a guardian of the planet's natural resources, and in this capacity, focuses on ways to broaden its reach and educate its readers about the unique relationship that humans have with the earth.

On the Spectral Line: Stories of the Dead - 0.00

On the Spectral Line: Stories of the Dead

Product Description

On the Spectral Line contains four chilling tales of the dead that will make your spine tingle!

Excerpts from two of the stories -

MUSIC FOR THE DEAD –
An intoxicating smell of burning leaves filled the night air. We walked across the road and down the street; the bar drifted away. We talked about music, and it seemed that I had know Jean all my life.

There was a schoolyard up ahead and we laughed like children as we ran toward it. We played on the swings and slides. Under the clear cool moon Jean spun the merry-go-round and jumped on.

"Come on!" she yelled.

But I didn't move.

The merry-go-round spun faster and faster until I could no longer see her at all, until I could only hear her laughter. It was a sound that took on a malignancy as it echoed into the trees. And for a single moment, I was terrified.

From ON THE SPECTRAL LINE -
Danny was not the kind of person to be afraid, but he was afraid now. He had lost a sense of time and felt trapped in a place that wouldn't be easy to leave, at least not tonight, and this crazy old man wanted him gone.

"How long have you been here?"

The old man didn't answer. His sunken face laughed in what looked almost like a convulsion. “Have I welcomed you in boy?” he asked in contradiction. “HAVE I?”

Welcomed? Danny shook his head.

The old man moved back into the shadows and from his outline now he seemed thin and frail; his wicked face was gone. An instant later, he filtered like smoke through the crack in the wall.

Quick History Story 2 - 1/20/12

Jan 20, 1961:

Robert Frost reads at JFK's inauguration

On this day, 87-year-old Robert Frost recited his poem "The Gift Outright" at the inauguration of President John F. Kennedy. Although Frost had written a new poem for the occasion, titled "Dedication," faint ink in his typewriter made the words difficult to read, so he recited "The Gift Outright" from memory.

Frost was born in California in 1874, the son of a journalist who died when Frost was 11. Frost's mother brought him to Massachusetts, where he graduated as co-valedictorian of his high school class. He attended Dartmouth and Harvard but didn't complete a degree at either school. Three years after high school, her married his fellow high school valedictorian, Elinor White.

Frost tried unsuccessfully to run a New England farm, and the family, which soon included four children, struggled with poverty for two decades. Increasingly depressed, Frost moved his family to England to make a fresh start in 1912. There, he published a poetry collection called A Boy's Will in 1913, which won praise from English critics and helped him win a U.S. publishing contract for his second book, North of Boston (1914). The American public took a liking to the 40-year-old Frost, who returned to the United States when World War I broke out and bought another farm in New Hampshire. He continued to publish books, and taught and lectured at Amherst, University of Michigan, Harvard, and Dartmouth. He endured personal tragedy when a son committed suicide and a daughter had a mental breakdown. While Frost never graduated from a university, he had collected 44 honorary degrees before he died in 1963.

Quick History Story 1 - 1/20/12

Jan 20, 1981:

Iran Hostage Crisis ends

Minutes after Ronald Reagan's inauguration as the 40th president of the United States, the 52 U.S. captives held at the U.S. embassy in Teheran, Iran, are released, ending the 444-day Iran Hostage Crisis.

On November 4, 1979, the crisis began when militant Iranian students, outraged that the U.S. government had allowed the ousted shah of Iran to travel to New York City for medical treatment, seized the U.S. embassy in Teheran. The Ayatollah Khomeini, Iran's political and religious leader, took over the hostage situation, refusing all appeals to release the hostages, even after the U.N. Security Council demanded an end to the crisis in an unanimous vote. However, two weeks after the storming of the embassy, the Ayatollah began to release all non-U.S. captives, and all female and minority Americans, citing these groups as among the people oppressed by the government of the United States. The remaining 52 captives remained at the mercy of the Ayatollah for the next 14 months.

President Jimmy Carter was unable to diplomatically resolve the crisis, and on April 24, 1980, he ordered a disastrous rescue mission in which eight U.S. military personnel were killed and no hostages rescued. Three months later, the former shah died of cancer in Egypt, but the crisis continued. In November 1980, Carter lost the presidential election to Republican Ronald Reagan. Soon after, with the assistance of Algerian intermediaries, successful negotiations began between the United States and Iran. On the day of Reagan's inauguration, the United States freed almost $8 billion in frozen Iranian assets, and the hostages were released after 444 days. The next day, Jimmy Carter flew to West Germany to greet the Americans on their way home.

In the immense solitude of his home in Northern Maine, Einar William Coates can hear his wife in the creaks in the walls and the settling of the stairs. He can smell her in the kitchen, can feel her in the wind that sneaks in through the single-paned windows in his bedroom. Now that this retired potato farmer from Northern Maine is alone in his home, his wife almost seems as alive in Einar’s house as she did in her own body. And in the darkest of times following Sarah Gamble Coates’s death, Einar understands no one really dies when they are dead. They simply move on to something else. In Sarah’s case, she moved on into the house—and into her husband.
But Einar also knows there can be no substitute for a wife, no moving on from one’s love. He knows that loneliness and despair, the two devils that come hand in hand, cannot be appeased by memories left in creaking wood or the smell of pillows.

When his two sons, Robert and Jason, pit themselves against each other in a brutal struggle of blood and family, Einar knows Sarah would have been better prepared to handle it. He knows he can only offer his stunted yet ultimately wise advice with the understanding that he cannot teach love to his sons, but instead can only hope to cultivate it when it develops in them. After all, they are no longer the young, rough-and-tumble boys they used to be. Instead, they are grown men facing the imperfections they bred in each other over the years.

A story about regaining hope, remembering love, and sacrificing everything in that pursuit, Confusing the Seasons follows the Coates men on a winter bound to guide them toward self-discovery—or self-destruction.

Lady Baldwin is beautiful, desirable, conniving, nasty, yet sometimes kind and very thoughtful. Loved and hated in equal measure, it's anyone's guess as to who would ultimately kill her. As a part of the English Aristocracy, she is very rich, surrounded by servants, and totally outrageous.
Told by a real English Butler with a certain degree of true English humor, this murder story will give you an insight into life in a wealthy, country mansion.

The Enchanted Noose - 0.00

The Enchanted Noose

Product Description

Janet Whetherall has an enchanted noose around her neck, a noose named Donald. It’s 1968 and the wild and windy cliffs of Cornwall, England have seen many strange characters over the centuries but none so peculiar and unpredictable as Donald Whetherall.

Tethered to Donald by marriage, Janet gives every drop of her being to support Donald’s artistic ambitions, but is rewarded by Donald’s flagrant infidelities. Janet blissfully ignores her husband’s dilly-dallying until he announces that a fellow artist, a woman with a murky past, will be moving into their crumbling mansion, Swindler’s Bluff. Janet, sensing Donald’s interest in the woman is more than artistic, flees the conjugal home, but finds life without her man is filled with peril. Chastened, she returns to Swindler’s Bluff where Donald and his lover soon plot to polish her off.

Three stone cottages lie close to Swindler’s Bluff. Edna and Tommy Thompson, octogenarians with a wild life between the sheets and a deep secret in their past lives, live in one of the houses. Another is occupied by Beatrice Beal, middle-aged and lonely, but with a fine nose for the affairs of others. The third cottage initially stands empty, but its owner, a former burglar, finally takes up residence as Archbishop of The Brothers of Bountiful Love, a religious sect with a penchant for robbing the local village shops and distributing the plunder to the poor.

These characters all have their own stories, but these tales entwine and finally lead to the bowels of Swindler’s Bluff, where Donald Whetherall stands poised with a quivering axe and a mind gone mad.

The Enchanted Noose is a 50,000-word parody, sometimes chilling, sometimes darkly humorous, but it’s a parody with a purpose, to play vulnerability and wickedness against one another, and to show how bravery glides among us in the least likely of forms.

Vol. V - Reprisal - Continuing the series into WWII as Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Callahan III faces personal tragedy during the Blitz in London as the war presents a very personal face. As he leaves his Embassy post to return to the United States, America joins Europe in the worldwide conflagration. Quick History Story 1 - 1/11/12

1993: BA dirty tricks against Virgin cost £3m

British Airways has ended one of the most bitter and protracted libel actions in aviation history in a humiliating climb-down.

At the High Court Christopher Clarke QC, counsel for BA, apologised "unreservedly" for an alleged "dirty tricks" campaign against Virgin Atlantic.

BA also agreed to pay damages of £500,000 to Virgin boss Richard Branson and £110,000 to his airline, as well as incurring legal costs of up to £3m.

Counsel for Virgin and Mr Branson, George Carman QC, had told Mr Justice Drake of "distinctly hostile" rumours that had been circulating about his client.

The traditional rivalry between the two airlines intensified from July 1991 when Virgin moved the centre of its operations from Heathrow to Gatwick, in direct competition with BA.

'Sharp business practices'

By October Mr Branson had accumulated evidence of BA employees poaching Virgin customers and tampering with confidential company files.

He also claimed that BA's PR consultant, Brian Basham, had been undermining him and his company's reputation in the City and the press.

Mr Branson confronted BA's non-executive directors about these "sharp business practises" in an open letter. They dismissed the allegations and said he was simply seeking publicity.

In February 1992, after an investigative report by Thames Television, BA bosses, including chairman Lord King, repeated their claims that Virgin was "securing publicity" in an internal magazine and various letters.

These written statements formed the basis of Mr Branson's libel case. BA and Lord King then counter-sued over Mr Branson's original allegations.

The counter-claim was also withdrawn today.

In Context:

Lord King retired six months early, in June 1993, and several other senior managers came under internal scrutiny.

For the financial year 1993-94 BA still made a pre-tax profit of £301m. In the year to the end of October 1993, Virgin Atlantic declared an operating loss of £9.3m.

In April 1993 Mr Branson went on to lodge a $325million action against BA in the US, accusing it of flaunting anti-trust laws over its domination of transatlantic flight routes.

Legal wrangles over this continued until the US courts threw out the case in 1999.

In 1994 Virgin won another £2.65m from BA in a separate case about aircraft maintenance.

Book Review - Boy With a Coin - 0.99

Boy With a Coin (Kindle Single)

Amazon.com Review

Emily Dickinson wrote: "The difference between Despair / And Fear-- is like the One / Between the instant of a Wreck / And when the Wreck has been..." National Book Award finalist Madison Smartt Bell seems to be languishing in that instant in his equally confounding but no less poetic Kindle Single, Boy with a Coin. In this case the wreck is the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that rocked Haiti on January 12th, 2010, killing an estimated 316,000 people, but the rest of Bell's story is a fiction. In it he does not cast a self-sacrificing Sean Penn, who--putting aside differences with Wyclef Jean--bands with him to pull children from the rubble of a crumbled school. Instead our enigmatic hero, Charlie Chapo, doesn't do anything more heroic than continue on an errand, one he had begun before the earth opened up and tried to "shake him off." What goes through his mind, what he sees along the way, is the heart of Bell's haunting narrative (not that it's always chaste or profound). But Boy with a Coin also serves as a quiet tribute to "the nameless but not unremembered dead." --Erin Kodicek

Customer Review:

When the massive and famous Haitian earthquake strikes almost halfway through this short story, white Charlie Chapo is dazed but determined to continue on his errand. He is vaguely aware of the suffering around him but cares no more than he does on other days in Port-au-Prince, where palpable suffering is never too far from view. This is a slice of life tale about an unsympathetic and self-absorbed wanderer, and it leaves me wondering if those who are geographically close to suffering have a greater obligation to do something about it than those who are far away but just as aware.

The storytelling style is entrancing, and the details are sometimes gritty, sometimes exotic, and sometimes mundane.

Poem of the Day - 1/11

Island

Rash of the harbor lights in the mountain region.
Night, he says, is the dark humor of the day—
first you are scared
but by the sunrise
I'll get you laughing.
My head, thrown back in laughter, has bought me more
than money thrown forward, and men
pressed me down and worked like a Chinese seamstress.
But none could slap my face as hard as the sea slaps
its adopted child and steps back, all tears.

This island spat out by the sun over the world's shoulder,
a fence holds the bougainvillea laughter behind its teeth,
a metal gate guards the doze of heat-stricken watchdogs.
A road comes up to my face and stands like a mirror
showing everything that has led me to it: a bed
soft like bruised fruit, a whole lime garden bruised
by the afternoon shade, and his book's hard spine
breaking with the day.

A body strips down all the way to forgiveness
and grants itself before there's even a reason, unless
it wants to tell the other: I forgive
your juices for not filling these hard fruit;
your skin for not cracking and rotting over the ants'
heads; I forgive your throat for not birthing the dog's cough;
I forgive your hand, right now rising, falling, and leaving trace
unlike what it praises; I forgive your shadow for never becoming
a stain to mark this road, this bed, but mostly this sea.

Bricks of gray moonlight fall weightlessly
through the wooden
shades
building a new wall above the sink.
Here he lies on his stomach—
the gap between his ass and his thighs
forms a perfect black diamond.

Horizon blistered by the setting sun heals, leaving
a hardly visible scar.
