If Lovin' You is Wrong - 0.00

Book Description
At the library, she meets Billy, a college student, who offers to tutor her free of charge. With his nerdy style and constant allergies, Billy is unintimidating to say the least, so Ireland takes him up on it. Delighted by the offer, Ireland goes back to her books with a newfound enthusiasm when guess who shows up?—Phil, her one night stand.
Ireland hadn’t counted on seeing him again, and Phil is not the type of guy she had in mind for marriage. A womanizing, commitment-phobic narcissist can’t change overnight. Can he?
Phil hasn’t been able to stop thinking about Ireland since that night. He’s even lost interest in his neighbor who is constantly throwing herself at him. But he always said he would never commit to one woman. Will Phil transform into the marrying type or resume his Casanova ways?
Either way, Ireland’s new friend, Billy, who she endearingly refers to as her little brother, will be there offering his shoulder to lean on. And she just might need it.

Poem of the Day - 8/30
Everyone is on the lookout for minor devastations
in themselves and in others. And throughout the world.
And it's nobody's fault. Angelic gehennas,
genes, as in genesis. Lawsonia and henna.
A voice bristles in the throat. Essentially the dark sky
and neon threads of mycelium in the enchanting forest,
as if that voice were always before you, twisted
the caps off mushrooms like light bulbs, and wiped out the lamps,
installing unadulterated darkness all around, shady flickers,
a faint undergrowth, a discreet swirling under one's feet
like the ground's very own diplomatic excuse,
a whisper, a wink of sand in the eye of a well.
When the forest set slides beneath the stage
and a new audience quakes with laughter
like the sky in a drizzle of falling stars,
there will be a change of scene in my vision,
it's warm, hot, boiling, scorching, scalding, and it's
here. Someone's stuck his hand in. It ate it up.
Then he ran as if burned and kept trying
to tear the air, for in the end it all
slipped out from under him,
drawn away on a short chord,
taken down.
The Last Adventure of Dr. Yngve Hogalum - 0.00

Product Description
From the Publisher:In this first novelette of the series The Magnetron Chronicles, we are introduced to Phineas J. Magnetron, an eccentric Nineteenth Century inventor blessed with a strange gift he doesn't completely understand. As a former soldier and current member of the Hogalum Society, an inscrutable secret organization of crime fighting adventurers, Phineas is no stranger to peril and derring-do. But when the Society founder dies, Phineas embarks on a daring and improbable caper to bring the good doctor's greatest dream to fruition posthumously. In the process, he not only horrifies his Society brothers, but unearths a haunting and compelling mystery.
Review by Kira Lerner, Author and Editor-in-Chief of Epiguide.com:
The Magnetron Chronicles relates the apocryphal tales of The Hogalum Society, a Victorian era club of "great men and great deeds" (of which Phineas Magnetron himself is a member, naturally). Think of a group comprised of Harry Houdini, Thomas Edison, Sherlock Holmes, Nikola Tesla, and other such fictional and real-life Steam Age luminaries with unconventional talents and ideas—all of whom were looked upon as a bit batty—and you'll have a good idea of the Hogalum Society.
Anyway, the conceit of the series is that we are reading Magnetron's journals, and in The Last Adventure of Dr. Yngve Hogalum we thereby learn of the strange events that occur when Phineas takes it upon himself to resurrect the spirit of Dr. Hogalum (the author tells me it's pronounced "HO-ga-lum"), the Society's beloved founder and mentor who has recently died. Phineas' plan (think: zombies) isn't warmly received by his compatriots in the group, who worry that he's lost his marbles. The fact that he tries to perform the necessary tasks himself is admirable but his plans go awry, and after digging up Hogalum's body, he retrieves only the head, which he intends to reanimate with voodoo. Slight problem, because (as his Haitian friend Petión observes) zombies are mindless bodies, and how useful is a mindless head?
As you can probably tell, the series is heavily inspired by the works of H. G. Wells, Jules Verne, and—to a lesser extent—Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. And hey, let's throw in Mark Twain as well, because—despite the fact that the journals are written with utter sincerity and seriousness, this is definitely (and intentionally) funny satire. For example, here's one of Dr. Hogalum's first comments upon his revival:
"I do not wish to appear ungrateful after having been raised from the dead," he said in a beleaguered tone, "but I must ask why you did not see fit to include my body in this enterprise!"
Indeed. D. L. Mackenzie's well-written Last Adventure of Dr. Yngve Hogalum harks back to the earliest days of the science fiction serial, and does a great job evoking the style of those genteel but breathless tales of remarkable discoveries, bizarre inventions and dangerous (mis)adventures.

Poem of the Day - 8/29
No matter how slowly you read the life
it speeds past. His parents wed. Soon he's born.
Then school, and Oxford, a taste for porn.
Then jobs, the many women (but no wife)
and the little songs, formal, bright and brief
but briskly playing notes of rue and scorn,
and only those, until each tune sounds worn,
the man too, instrument of ceaseless grief.
Still, when he's buried, you come, another ghost,
among his friends and family, the known,
the unacknowledged, wearing your own gown
of tears, your empty voice raised with the rest.
So much lament, for see what he has sown
that only now you gather what you've lost.
Quote of the Day - 8/29

Poem of the Day - 8/24
I like the dead who never leave, the ones
still in the room—like Uncle Phil,
who's bound to smack the back of my head again
once we're alone, his response to my pierced ear
thirty years ago. Maybe he was drunk,
or his own dead mom was in the room
smacking him in the head. Smack!
~
Once when my son was young
I drove off without him,
leaving the big boy who had gone to pee.
Nine blocks away, I found myself
talking to an empty car seat.
I was dead, of shame.
It was what death will be,
where no one will see me
u-turning always, across three lanes of traffic.

Quick History Story - 8/3
Boeing 707 crashes into a mountain near Agadir, Morocco
On this day in 1975, a chartered Boeing 707 jetliner crashes in the Atlas Mountains near Agadir, a coastal city in southern Morocco. All 188 people aboard the plane were killed, in the fourth worst air disaster to that date.
Owned by the Jordanian airline Alia and chartered to Royal Air Maroc, the 707 left LeBourget Airport in Paris at 2:20 a.m. on the morning of August 3, 1975. Apart from four Europeans, all of the passengers on board were Moroccan citizens who worked in France and were traveling home for their summer holidays. The flight disappeared from Agadir airport-control radar at 4:28 a.m.; an airport official had spoken via radio with the pilot moments earlier, with no hint of trouble. The plane was scheduled to land in Agadir just two minutes later, at 4:30 a.m., and was descending for approach in heavy fog when the right wing tip and one of the engines struck a peak at an altitude of 2,400 feet. The pilot lost control of the plane, which crashed into a ravine, exploded and burned near the small, remote village of Imzizen. All 181 passengers were killed, along with seven crewmembers.
The incident outside Agadir marked the fourth worst air disaster in history, after a Turkish DC10 that crashed March 3, 1974 north of Paris, killing all 345 passengers and crew; a U.S. military plane that went down outside Saigon on April 4, 1974, killing more than 200; and a chartered Dutch DC8 jetliner that crashed in Sri Lanka on December 4, 1971, killing 191.
The Boeing 707 first went into service in 1958, having been developed to meet the need of airlines (particularly Pan-American) for a trans-Atlantic jetliner with a large seating capacity. With its four engines, the 707 was capable of traveling some 6,000 miles (enough to cross the Atlantic Ocean) nonstop, and boasted a seating capacity of up to 190 people. Thanks to the popularity of the 707 among international airlines, Boeing became world's biggest aircraft manufacturer, pushing aside rival Douglas Aircraft Company (later the McDonnell Douglas Corporation).
The Morocco crash of August 1975 was the second crash of a Boeing 707 to occur over the course of the 1970s; a Jordanian 707 had crashed at Nigeria's Kano Airport in January 1973, killing 176 people. After the introduction of its larger, quieter and more fuel-efficient 747 jumbo jet in January 1978, Boeing ended production of the 707. U.S. airlines sold most of their remaining 707s to Third World carriers, some of them priced as low as $1 million.
