Product Description

Trooper Josh Reynolds night goes straight to hell when he stumbles upon what was supposed to be the neighborhood Halloween party.

We were late. Linda, my wife, wouldn’t go down to the Grayson’s without me, not since the episode with their son last year.

“This is Trooper Josh Reynolds with the State Police . . .I, uh . . ,” I trailed off as I approached the yard, my brain unable to wrap around what I was seeing.

This year, it wasn’t wax figures propped in front of the house.

Poem 3 - 10/29/11

A simple act of kindness can change a person's whole day.
What was once dark, dismal, and gray, you can make gay.
It doesn't take much effort to impart something magnificent.
I must tell you that a kind word has much force, far from insignificant.

A simple act of kindness can be the difference between roads traveled,
for instance, to a troubled person needing a lift out of sinking gravel.
If you could save a life or a soul by giving a heartfelt greeting, I know you would.
Or, stop to say: "Are you okay?" to a soul that was needing.

A simple act of kindness can put color back into a grimacing face;
Move someone from self-destruction and self-hate,
So they can find redemption in God's loving grace.
It need not be your life's work, but it can give worth to someone else's life:
Turn away from strife to a place where hope is rife.

A simple act of kindness can bridge the chasm between enemies;
Put aside pride and ambition so children can grow with fonder memories.
Our differences are so minute when likenesses are tallied,
That comforting a sick child is salient, no matter creed or malady.

A simple act of kindness can bring distance short;
When families are vexed and mouths speak of tort.
The irony of our Human frailties can be abated with kindness,
to put an end to senseless acts of depravity, and to visceral violence.

Poem 2 - 10/29/11

There are two kinds of intelligence: one acquired,
as a child in school memorizes facts and concepts
from books and from what the teacher says,
collecting information from the traditional sciences
as well as from the new sciences.

With such intelligence you rise in the world.
You get ranked ahead or behind others
in regard to your competence in retaining
information. You stroll with this intelligence
in and out of fields of knowledge, getting always more
marks on your preserving tablets.

There is another kind of tablet, one
already completed and preserved inside you.
A spring overflowing its springbox. A freshness
in the center of the chest. This other intelligence
does not turn yellow or stagnate. It’s fluid,
and it doesn’t move from outside to inside
through conduits of plumbing-learning.

This second knowing is a fountainhead
from within you, moving out.

Poem 1 - 10/29/11

Full knee-deep lies the winter snow,
And the winter winds are wearily sighing:
Toll ye the church bell sad and slow,
And tread softly and speak low,
For the old year lies a-dying.
Old year you must not die;
You came to us so readily,
You lived with us so steadily,
Old year you shall not die.

He lieth still: he doth not move:
He will not see the dawn of day.
He hath no other life above.
He gave me a friend and a true truelove
And the New-year will take ‘em away.
Old year you must not go;
So long you have been with us,
Such joy as you have seen with us,
Old year, you shall not go.

He froth’d his bumpers to the brim;
A jollier year we shall not see.
But tho’ his eyes are waxing dim,
And tho’ his foes speak ill of him,
He was a friend to me.
Old year, you shall not die;
We did so laugh and cry with you,
I’ve half a mind to die with you,
Old year, if you must die.

He was full of joke and jest,
But all his merry quips are o’er.
To see him die across the waste
His son and heir doth ride post-haste,
But he’ll be dead before.
Every one for his own.
The night is starry and cold, my friend,
And the New-year blithe and bold, my friend,
Comes up to take his own.

How hard he breathes! over the snow
I heard just now the crowing cock.
The shadows flicker to and fro:
The cricket chirps: the light burns low:
‘Tis nearly twelve o’clock.
Shake hands, before you die.
Old year, we’ll dearly rue for you:
What is it we can do for you?
Speak out before you die.

His face is growing sharp and thin.
Alack! our friend is gone,
Close up his eyes: tie up his chin:
Step from the corpse, and let him in
That standeth there alone,
And waiteth at the door.
There’s a new foot on the floor, my friend,
And a new face at the door, my friend,
A new face at the door.

Quick History Story - 10/29/11

Oct 29, 1947:

Richard Dreyfuss born

On this day in 1947, the actor Richard Dreyfuss, who will rise to fame in Hollywood in the 1970s with starring roles in such movies as American Graffiti, Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and The Goodbye Girl, is born in Brooklyn, New York.

Dreyfuss, who registered as a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War and worked at a hospital instead of joining the military, began his acting career in the 1960s, working in theater and television. His first big movie role was in 1973’s American Graffiti, directed by George Lucas (who four years later would have a massive hit with Star Wars). American Graffiti told the story of two young men (Dreyfuss and Ron Howard) who spend a final night cruising around their California town with their buddies before they are both scheduled to leave for college the next morning. In 1974, Dreyfuss played the title role in The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, about a poor Jewish boy growing up in Montreal who becomes obsessed with owning his own land.

In 1975, Dreyfuss co-starred with Roy Scheider and Robert Shaw in the director Steven Spielberg’s breakthrough film, Jaws, about a killer shark that terrorizes a beach community. Jaws, in which Dreyfuss played the marine biologist Matt Hooper, was the first movie to gross more than $100 million. Dreyfuss went on to star in Spielberg’s next blockbuster, 1977’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind, in which he portrayed a man contacted by aliens. That same year, Dreyfuss starred in the director Herbert Ross’s The Goodbye Girl, which was based on a Neil Simon screenplay about a struggling actor who unexpectedly ends up sharing an apartment with a woman and her young daughter. The Goodbye Girl was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and Dreyfuss won the Best Actor Oscar.

In the early 1980s, the unconventionally handsome actor’s acting career cooled amidst a drug arrest and several box-office disappointments. However, in 1986 he co-starred with Nick Nolte and Bette Midler in the well-received comedy Down and Out in Beverly Hills and in the director Rob Reiner’s hit Stand by Me. In 1988, he teamed with Danny DeVito in the writer-director Barry Levinson’s Tin Men, about two aluminum-siding salesmen. During the 1990s, Dreyfuss was featured in such movies as Postcards from the Edge (1990), with Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine; What About Bob? (1991), with Bill Murray; Another Stakeout (1993), with Emilio Estevez and Rosie O’Donnell; and Mr. Holland’s Opus (1995), which earned him a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his performance as a high school music teacher.

In 2001, Dreyfuss played Alexander Haig, the U.S. secretary of state under President Ronald Reagan, in the TV movie The Day Reagan was Shot. Also that year, he starred as a college professor in the TV series The Education of Max Bickford, which was cancelled in 2002. In 2006, he was part of the ensemble cast of Poseidon, a remake of the 1972 disaster movie The Poseidon Adventure. More recently, in 2008, Dreyfuss played Vice President Dick Cheney in writer-director Oliver Stone’s W., about President George W. Bush.

Quote of the Day - 10/29

Every Witch Way But Wicked - $0.99

Every Witch Way But Wicked

Review

I liked every single story and found so many new series and authors to try, it was crazy. That is just something that doesn't normally happen when you pick up a book like this.
Usually you are lucky if you like half the stories and more than likely you only picked it up to begin with becuase of that one author you just love and have to suffer through the rest of the stories.
Not this book, this book was chalked full of great stories, wonderful characters and some pretty fantastic writing and while I did manly read this book because of one author, Barbra Annino, all of the authors did a fantastic book on the stories in this book.
So, my overall consensus? This book was awesome. It was full of very wonderful talented writers that you really really need to try. Also the beautiful cover and foreword was written by the very talented Amanda Hocking. If you haven't picked up any of her books, please check them out also, they are fabulous reads!! She has more than series and a little bit that will appeal to everyone!

Nordic Nights - $0.00

Nordic Nights (The Alix Thorssen Mysteries)

Set in wintry Jackson Hole, Wyo., this crisp, straightforward mystery plunges gallery owner Alix Thorssen into the local Nordic Nights festival, which features ice carving, a parade, ski racesAand a startling murder. Famous Norwegian painter Glasius Dokken, who had come to town for his show at Alix's gallery, is found stabbed with an ice pick in the hotel room of an itinerant and provocative fortune-teller. Arrested for the killing is Alix's glumly stoic stepfather (his fingerprints were all over the crime scene), who reveres his Scandinavian heritage and has painstakingly crafted a replica of a Viking ship to be displayed in the parade. Alix, persistent and unflappable, begins to investigate, but accidents plague her and her family: the Viking ship nearly crushes her; her mother barely escapes a hit-and-run; and Bjarne, a seductive ski-racer who has beguiled Alix, is also implicated in the murder. McClendon works a good deal of Nordic folklore into her story. The fortune-teller is a specialist in runes, and her silver-and-wood tools quickly become a central point in the case: Are the runes museum quality? Have they been stolen? The third entry in the McClendon's series (after The Bluejay Shaman) conjures up the icy beauty of Jackson Hole, and though the dialogue can be stilted, her agreeably feisty heroine and a hair-raising finale will keep readers entertained throughout the night, Nordic or otherwise.

Quick History Story - 10/25/11

Oct 25, 2002:

"Camelot," "Harry Potter" star Richard Harris dies

On this day in 2002, Irish-born actor Richard Harris, whose career spanned six decades and included starring roles in films ranging from "Camelot" to the "Harry Potter" series, dies of cancer at age 72 in London. Harris was known for his acting talent as well as his carousing off-camera. As BBC.com reported after his death, "He was everything a bad-boy Hollywood star should be: a handsome, boozing, brawling, womanizing, jet-setter whose moody magnificence brought glamour to even his weakest movies."

Richard St. John Harris was born on October 1, 1930, in Limerick, Ireland, where his family had a flour-milling business. As a young man, Harris was a talented rugby player, but his athletic career was cut short by a battle with tuberculosis. He went on to study acting in the mid-1950s at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, and afterward found work in various London theater productions. By the late 1950s, he was earning small roles on the big screen. Among his early film credits were supporting parts in "The Guns of Navarone" (1961), featuring Gregory Peck and Anthony Quinn, and "Mutiny on the Bounty" (1962), with Marlon Brando.

Harris shot to international stardom with his performance as a coal miner tuned rugby player in 1963's "This Sporting Life." The role earned him an Academy Award nomination for best actor. A long list of acting credits would follow—Harris made more than 70 films over the course of his career—including a 1967 cinematic adaptation of the Broadway musical "Camelot," in which he played King Arthur. In addition to his movie roles, Harris became equally famous for his reputation as a raconteur and hell-raiser. He reportedly suffered nine broken noses during his life and received last rites twice from a priest.

Harris portrayed a hardened Irish farmer in 1990's "The Field," for which he garnered a second Oscar nomination for best actor. He went on to appear in such movies as "The Unforgiven" (1992) directed by Clint Eastwood, "Patriot Games" (1992), "Cry, the Beloved Country" (1995) and "Gladiator" (2000), in which he played Marcus Aurelius to Russell Crowe's Maximus.

In 2001, Harris gained legions of new fans when he played Albus Dumbledore, the wise, white-bearded headmaster of Hogwarts School, in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." Harris reprised this role for the second film in the series, "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," which was released in the U.S. in November 2002, just weeks after his death.

The Cicadas - $1

The Cicadas

Product Description

It’s 3:08 AM and Sara Parker wakes to find her bed surrounded by hideous creatures with large eyes and thin frowning mouths. They take her to the ‘silver house’ and perform painful surgery on her uterus, but by 6:00 AM, she remembers only one thing – a tiny cicada, normally clicking and buzzing in the trees above, had found his way into her room during the night.

Years later, after many more forgotten nighttime encounters, Sara witnesses a crash in the forest, and a perfect man appears among the wreckage. She learns that the man has been engineered to appeal to most earth females, that he has been part of her abduction team since childhood, and that he is in love with Sara.

By this time Sara is already married to someone else, but a car accident has confined her husband to a wheel chair and has left him bitter, straining their marriage and testing her love for him. A conflict ensues between the perfect alien-human hybrid man, Sara’s husband, and the aliens who are angry at their prototype human for misbehaving.

In a moment of confusion, Sara fires bullets at both men, and ends up on trial for the murder of her husband. While awaiting trial, she visits a hypnotherapist and learns the truth of the alien encounters, and of that tragic night when she fired the weapon. The final truth, however, doesn’t emerge until Sara’s day in court is nearly complete.

Amazon to add HTML5 support to Kindle content

Amazon on Friday announced a new HTML5-based e-book format called Kindle Format 8 (KF8), that will allow publishers to create content with rich formatting and advanced design elements tailored to the company’s tablet and e-reader lines.

Kindle Format 8 vs Mobi 7

The company describes KF8 as a better alternative to the current Mobi 7 standard, allowing publishers to create “great-looking books” in genres that require rich formatting, such as children’s picture books, comics and graphic novels.

KF8 will offer publishers access to over 150 formatting features including HTML5 and CSS3, however video and audio are not among the supported HTML tags and CSS elements listed on Amazon’s website. Though the company mentions a variety of elements that will help publishers “create Kindle Books that readers will love,” including high-resolution color, sidebars, Scalable Vector Graphics, CSS selectors, text on background images and more.

Writers will initially be limited to publishing e-books in KF8 for Amazon's Kindle Fire tablet, with the support for the new format coming to the company's entire 2011 lineup of Kindle readers in the coming months. The new format will also be compatible with existing Kindle desktop and mobile applications including the Kindle app (iTunes link) for iPhone and iPad.

Twenty-Somewhere tells the story of three best friends as they navigate life after college. Beautiful and confident Sophie Lin, goody goody aspiring writer Claudia Bradford, and boy-crazy nerd MJ Alexander are ready to take on the Real World -- or so they think.

Six weeks later, all she has to show for her idealism is a growing stack of unpaid bills.

As their relationships go sour, their careers sputter, and a few too many ethical dilemmas arise, the girls reunite in Paris, desperate for a dose of the one thing they can always count on: each other. Blood Ties (PI Julie Collins)

Product Description

Julie Collins is stuck in a dead-end secretarial job with the Bear Butte County Sheriff’s office, and still grieving over the unsolved murder of her Lakota half-brother. Lack of public interest in finding his murderer, or the killer of several other transient Native American men, has left Julie with a bone-deep cynicism she counters with tequila, cigarettes, and dangerous men. The one bright spot in her mundane life is the time she spends working part-time as a PI with her childhood friend, Kevin Wells. When the body of a sixteen-year old white girl is discovered in nearby Rapid Creek, Julie believes this victim will receive the attention others were denied. Then she learns Kevin has been hired, mysteriously, to find out where the murdered girl spent her last few days. Julie finds herself drawn into the case against her better judgment, and discovers not only the ugly reality of the young girl’s tragic life and brutal death, but ties to her and Kevin’s past that she is increasingly reluctant to revisit. On the surface the situation is eerily familiar. But the parallels end when Julie realizes some family secrets are best kept buried deep. Especially those serious enough to kill for.

Coombe's Wood - $0.00

Coombe's Wood

Product Description

Izzy Santana and her 13-year-old son Connor move into a Reading Council-provided flat in the sleepy village of Cedham. Locals darkly warn her to stay away from nearby Coombe’s Wood, hinting first at elves, then at multiple murders… which may or may not have taken place in the woods hundreds of years ago. It’s all ludicrously superstitious, and Izzy is so delighted to have found a haven for her son – after being threatened by her sadistic ex-partner George – that she takes little notice.

She meets a neighbour who seems kindly, if a trifle fey, and who takes a great interest in her son. Connor seems instantly comfortable with him. She begins to feel as if she is also falling under his spell. But Connor is bullied at school, and one night she finds herself tracking those bullies in the wood, where she believes they are waiting for him. She doesn’t find them, but something closes in on her – something that sounds like a savage animal. As she runs she realises she may have been set up – or Connor was – to be caught by whatever the animal was. She strengthens the barricades in her flat, no longer puts all the local tales about ‘danger in them woods’ down to superstition, and even begins to wonder about the way she was selected by the Reading Council officer to live in the village in the first place.

Then a slit rabbit turns up on her doorstep, along with a distinctive cigarette butt, and she knows George has found her. Desperately compassionate, her neighbour calls the police, who turn up next day, harumph the ceiling, and take the attitude: You’ve not been attacked, then, Miss? You haven’t actually seen him? Why, if your ex-lover has tracked you down, do you suppose he would he dump a rabbit at your door…? Her own question, more urgent, is: if George can get in the front door of the building, can he get into her flat?

What Izzy needs to do is protect Connor. She has already started to uncover the ancient secrets of the village, and now she works out the perfect way to get rid of George… for good.

Now back at her job and her house and her life, she finds herself faced with an old client, Jeremy Waldoch, who tells her a female former employee has brought a case against him.

It’s not Waldoch’s first defense. It’s not even the first defense Megan’s handled for him.

There was another one before. Another former employee. Another woman. Another set of claims arising out of sex, out of relationships gone bad, and – as Megan starts to discover when she digs into the new case – out of diamonds and deceit and murder.

But she’s not the only one looking at Jeremy Waldoch. Megan’s agreement to take the case sets her on a course that brings her to the attention of Jackson Hanley, a federal agent with an altogether different interest in Megan’s client.

Hanley’s task is to bring down the man who runs Laurentian Mines, a violently aggressive diamond mining company – a “glass house” – in a forgotten corner of South Africa. That man is Waldoch himself, and when Hanley can’t get Waldoch for what he's done in Africa, he knows he’ll have to find a way to get him in the United States.

When all those worlds come together, Megan faces choices she doesn’t want and options she doesn’t like, ultimately finding herself in the middle of a battle between Hanley and Waldoch, truth and lies, and right and wrong – a battle that extends across continents and an ocean in a shattering series of events that may cost her everything she has.

The Kindle ebook edition of Glass House also includes the first chapter of Omicron, which is also available for Kindle.
